Oh, Houston Texans... When will you fulfill your potential and actually make the playoffs? When will you finally beat the Colts, the gold standard in your division? When will you stop choking games away?

All of these questions are likely to persist this year, unless something new is in the water down in Texas. The Texans haven't really improved their team in any significant area for this year. Matt Schaub is still their quarterback. Yes, he is a fantasy players' dream. Andre Johnson is still their wide receiver, and an excellent one at that. They still have Steve Slaton, who vastly underachieved last year after having a breakout year prior to last season. Beyond these three cornerstones, the Texans don't have much else. Mario Williams anchors the defense that is young and inexperienced.

This team is just average in every sense of the word. That's the bottom line. In every defensive category they were in the middle of the pack. In addition, there are too many question marks. Who is their number two receiver? I have absolutely no idea. Can their defense sustain a good offense? And what the hell are they doing with Matt Leinart?

Time will tell how well these guys will do this year. My bet is another 9-7 year, another missed opportunity to miss the playoffs. Call me if you see something different, but my mind is made up. [...]

Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing said Thursday he never used any banned substances even though he tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug. Cushing was suspended for four games without pay last week for violating the NFL's drug policy. His appeal was denied.

Cushing confirmed he tested positive for HCG, a fertility drug that is on the league's banned substance list.

"The question of how it got into my body is still unclear," he said. "It's something that I'm very personally concerned about, just the fact that how it's there and what's going to determine it from happening again, and that's something we're going to have to medically investigate."

He said that after failing the test, he was told HCG can get in your body from injecting it or because of tumors. He said this information led him to believe he had tumors. He did not say what kind of tumors.

The Texans’ performance in their last five games will determine the fate of coach Gary Kubiak and his assistants.

Owner Bob McNair is disappointed in the 5-6 record, the three-game losing streak and their inability to win close games. He hasn’t given up on the season, and, as always, he’ll evaluate Kubiak after the season.

“Right now, I have a coach,” McNair said Tuesday. “Since I have a coach, and I haven’t made any decisions to replace my coach, I’m not even thinking about anybody else. I’m just thinking about winning this next game against Jacksonville.”

The Texans play Jacksonville, Seattle and St. Louis in their next three games. They close against Miami and New England.

“This is a critical time,” McNair said. “My true feeling is we have our best chance of developing a winning team with Gary as opposed to someone else, at this point in time. Making a change is very disruptive.

“This is a critical time. I want to see how Gary manages it. In the past, he’s managed it very well when his back’s been against the wall. I hope he will now because I think he’s very sound.

Click here to read the full article – By Houston Chronicle
