Cushing denies banned substance use

Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing said Thursday he never used any banned substances even though he tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug.

Cushing was suspended for four games without pay last week for violating the NFL’s drug policy. His appeal was denied.

Cushing confirmed he tested positive for HCG, a fertility drug that is on the league’s banned substance list.

“The question of how it got into my body is still unclear,” he said. “It’s something that I’m very personally concerned about, just the fact that how it’s there and what’s going to determine it from happening again, and that’s something we’re going to have to medically investigate.”

He said that after failing the test, he was told HCG can get in your body from injecting it or because of tumors. He said this information led him to believe he had tumors. He did not say what kind of tumors.

“I personally know I’m not injecting myself with anything,” he said. “I played the whole season thinking this could not only be my last season, but my last year.”

Daniels becoming favorite target for Texans

Houston wide receiver Andre Johnson leads the NFL with 634 yards receiving, but tight end Owen Daniels isn’t far behind.

Daniels leads all tight ends and is tied for 10th in the league overall with 497 yards receiving. His team-leading five touchdown receptions are proof that the fourth-year player has become key to Houston’s recent success.

Daniels’ teammates are so impressed with his play that they’ve nicknamed him “Awesome.”

“I think right now you could easily put him as one of the top tight ends in the NFL,” Johnson said. “As time goes along he’s only going to get better and better.”

The modest Daniels cringes when his nickname is brought up. He knows his production has been helped by being on the field with one of the NFL’s best receivers.

Texans LB Cushing, WR Johnson miss practice

Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing and wide receiver Andre Johnson both did not practice on Wednesday.

Cushing is dealing with a bothersome foot injury, but it has not kept him out of a game yet this season. The rookie out of USC has 56 tackles and one interception over seven games in 2009.

Johnson suffered a lung contusion in last Sunday’s 24-21 win over San Francisco and was listed as day-to-day with the injury.

Texans sign Winborn

The NFL’s trading deadline came and went Tuesday with, as expected, the Texans making no moves. But they did sign free-agent linebacker Jamie Winborn to their active roster. He’ll replace rookie defensive end Tim Jamison, who returns to the practice squad two games after he was first activated.

The 5-11, 230-pound Winborn was a second-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers out of Vanderbilt in 2001. He spent five seasons with the Niners, one with Jacksonville, one with Tampa Bay and the last two with Denver. He played in all 16 games for the Broncos in 2008, making 11 starts. Winborn signed with Atlanta over the offseason but was released by the Falcons in their final cut at the end of the preseason.

Texans run defense in sudden state of denial

Texans rookie coordinator Frank Bush’s rushing defense began the season in the deepest of funks. Trampled by the Jets, befuddled by the Titans and punctured by the Jaguars, Houston found itself dead last in the NFL in a statistical category that tends to be seen as a measure of a team’s toughness, its elemental grit.

There’s nothing fancy, pretty or scientific about stuffing a running play. It’s a brute-force, stand-your-ground, may-the-best-man-win kind of thing, and the Texans were losing almost every battle — comically so on occasion. In those first three games, they allowed scoring sprints of 91, 61, 57 and 38 yards among eight rushing touchdowns total. Fifteen times they got burned for gains of 10 or more yards.

Something had to give. Or better, the Texans simply had to stop giving. And they have, mounting a remarkable, almost jaw-dropping reversal that has been all about saving face. Climbing a fourth of the way up the league standings over the last three Sundays — 24th doesn’t look nearly so bad when you’re coming from 32nd — they held the Raiders, Cardinals and Bengals to less than 50 yards rushing apiece. To put that in perspective, consider this: Texans defenses had done it just four times previously in franchise history
